Should be interesting, but since good acting is a key part of my enjoyment of a movie, I have some reservations. The action scenes may be as real as it gets, but it could fall apart when they start talking.

hehe well it can be any worse than the Charlie Sheen and Michael Biehn SEALs movie which featured cheesy acting and silly actions sequences.

Anyhoo heres a behind the scenes making-of featurette..

ohmy.. one of the SEALs filmed in this "Act of Valor" movie was killed last year in Afghanistan. Hopefully his family will get some of the profit from the movie.

There have been some great movies over the years that used non-actors for authenticity. Bicycle Thieves is probably the most famous. That's straight up one of the all time great movies. The Battle Of Algiers, another all time great, used native Algierians instead of professional actors. Although a lot of their lines were dubbed. City Of God is a modern classic and personal favorite. They used actual Brazilian street kids and the end result is amazing.

My favorite is THE LONGEST DAY.

Most war movies center on the Americans or one certain nation fighting another nation.

I mean in WW2 the Americans wern't the only soldiers on the beach at Normandy.

That's kinda why I liked THE LONGEST DAY.

Well, American audiences aren't going to get excited about the Seige of Stalingrad, the Battle of Kursk, or the retreat from Dunkirk.

We did enjoy A Bridge Too Far, though, which highlighted Monty's major fuck-up.

That would be every movie with Audey Murphy in it, wouldn't it?

Come to think of it, I've never seen an Audey Murphy movie. But that would be correct.
Speaking of World War II, The Best Years Of Our Lives isn't technically a war movie. It's about 3 veterans struggling to readjust to civilian life after the war. One of them is a disabled vet, a sailor who lost both his hands. He was played by Harold Russell who was not an actor, but an Army vet who lost both his hands is a stateside accident. He did so well in the role that he was actually nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. The Oscar Board of Governors didn't think he'd win the award and still wanted to honor him so they gave him an honorary Oscar. Then when the votes were counted, he actually won Best Supporting Actor. This made him the only person in Oscar history to win two Oscars for the same role.

I agree. Many people aren't actors until they get a part in a movie. Dennis Farina comes to mind. And Dale Dye, R Lee Ermy. Many non actors have great acting skills. They have to start someplace. We shall see if any of the Seals have what it takes to continue and make acting a career.
You have never seen an Audie Murphy movie?
