In memory of MW Grubb Sr (My ex's grandfather). Grandad was a Medic on D-Day. I can't imagine going through that hell and not having a gun. He was a wonderful man, funny, deeply religious, involved in his church and community, and a loving husband for 69 years. He was 90 and will be buried today, Memorial Day, with a 21 gun salute in Princeton, WV.

And he lived to be 90? It's a hardcore generation we're losing, the things they know about living...

I will spend time today considering my uncle who didn't survive the war. I'm the last living person who remembers him. He was 22 when he died at Bastogne. I will also think about my other relatives who were in harm's way and survived.

Yes, he turned 90 in February. He was an awesome man. After the war he went back to a little town in the mountains of WV and became the county's milk man. After he retired he continued to serve his community. His hobby was woodcrafting and made everything from wooden kitchen toys for the Sunday school class at church to spinning wheels for the family. He helped the other men at church with the apple butter each year and would always give us several mason jars full. When the area flooded he always pitched in to help others clean up even if he had issues himself.

He didn't talk about his military service very often. I tried to get him to go on a cruise with us once and he declined but followed up telling me about being on the boat over to Normandy for 50 some days and how when they landed most of the men were still seasick.

He was a jokester and he drove way too fast on the country roads. I once gave him an Angel pin for his car that said "Never drive faster than your Guardian angel can fly". He laughed about it as he put it in his car.

If I had to pick the one thing I admired most about him it would be the deep love he had for his wife. They had that "knowing look" across the table. It warmed my heart to watch them.

We will miss him so very much.

I attended memorial services yesterday and there was only about a hundred people there. If you count the 3 county area we have about 300,000 residents and a fair number, I really do not know how many, claim to support our troops but fail to honor their sacrifices by attending services dedicated in their honor.

It has just come to my attention that the president failed to attend memorial services at Arlington. Does he have no honor?
