Even though we are 11 percent of the US population, we make up a quarter of the homeless. Does our gov't really support the troops? You know, like they are always accusing all of us against the war of not doing?

WASHINGTON - Veterans make up one in four homeless people in the United States, though they are only 11 percent of the general adult population, according to a report to be released Thursday.

And homelessness is not just a problem among middle-age and elderly veterans. Younger veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are trickling into shelters and soup kitchens seeking services, treatment or help with finding a job.
The Veterans Affairs Department has identified 1,500 homeless veterans from the current wars and says 400 of them have participated in its programs specifically targeting homelessness.
The Alliance to End Homelessness, a public education nonprofit, based the findings of its report on numbers from Veterans Affairs and the Census Bureau. 2005 data estimated that 194,254 homeless people out of 744,313 on any given night were veterans.
In comparison, the VA says that 20 years ago, the estimated number of veterans who were homeless on any given night was 250,000.

Any ideas how we can help with this. I contribute (not just money but volunteer) to the local food shelf but that does not reach the homeless in my community just the low income people. I think most of these guys stay just out of reach of government services. When I do my doctor visits to the VA I will break a $20 into 4 $5's. Sometimes I'm down 5 or 10 before I leave. It's probably not right but I don't mind cause I don't know what else to do. At least I have some degree of confidence that I gave it to a veteran, so don't bust my bubble on that.

Universal Healthcare would be a start. Many of the homeless vets have war related problems as far as fitting into society and getting professional help would go a long way to helping their situation.

The number of Veteran's among the homeless is merely an incidental statistic unless a direct link between military service and homelessness can be proven.

So far, to my knowledge, it hasn't been.

They have coverage to some extent through the VA but unless your a 20 year man your not locked in to anything.
I don't follow you about the link, there is no link between them it's that these men and women gave their life in service to a thankless nation...
