Iceland could have gay marriage by June | News Story on 365gay.com

Iceland is hopping on the same-sex marriage bandwagon and could have marriage equality legal by June, San Diego Gay and Lesbian News reports.

Icleand, the liberal island nation of 320,000, is the first country to have a lesbian head of state, Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir.

Sigurdardottir’s administration sent a bill to Parliament in March outlining marriage equality rights. The bill is expected to pass soon and could be in place for same-sex marriages by June 27.
Sigurdardottir has been in a registered partnership with writer/playwright Jonina Leosdotttir since 2002.
Another nation sees the light and is ready to allow same sex marriage. Will the US be the last one in line?

Iceland is fine-tuning marriage-equality bill | San Diego Gay & Lesbian News

    Johanna Sigurdardóttir, Iceland's prime minister

REYKJAVIK, Iceland – The isolated island of Iceland is putting the finishing touches on a bill supporting marriage equality.
The liberal nation, which has a population of about 320,000, is already one of the most progressive in the world toward LGBT equal rights.
Iceland is the first nation in the world to have an LGBT person as head of state. Openly lesbian politician Johanna Sigurdardóttir became prime minister last year when voters supporting the Social Democrats and their partners, the Left-Greens, ousted the conservative Independent Party that had ruled for 18 years.
The Sigurdardóttir administration presented the bill to Parliament on March 23. The bill’s passage is expected soon, and same-sex marriage could become legal as early as June 27.
Sigurdardóttir and writer/playwright Jonina Leosdotttir entered into a registered partnership in 2002. The prime minister has two adult sons from an earlier marriage.
Iceland is in the northern Atlantic Ocean between Greenland and the Nordic countries of Norway and Sweden.
In other news, same-sex marriage is also being discussed in Portugal. Neighboring Spain already has marriage equality.
You will note that Spain and Portugal are going to do the same thing soon.

I hope that the Icelandic Parliament has the resources to deal with this matter. They have been bankrupted by a corrupt bank and have little industry or natural resources to fall back on. Their currency is worthless and people are emigrating like rats off a sinking ship. It's a real shame since they are one of the more progressive countries in Europe.

They hopefully will turn that around. They are very progressive in their leadership. This is a great step. The election of a lesbian Prime Minister was fantastic. I may have to travel there at some time. So many countries are finding the openness to allow equality in marriage to LGBT people. A big thumbs up to those nations.
