    Diabetes Cure From Dolphins?

Researchers found that the mammal can induce the condition when there is little food around and turn it off when food is abundant.

They believe it is a unique ability in the animal kingdom and results from the mammal’s need to maintain high blood sugar levels to feed its big brain.

But they also believe it is an ability that humans have lost through evolution and that studying dolphins could lead to techniques to re-activate it.

I heard an interview with one of the researchers on NPR today. It's very interesting; they were conducting what they thought would be a routine blood screen on Navy dolphins. Scientific discoveries aren't always sought after.

The best ones seem to be found by accident.

Agreed - which is why the most "useless" research turns out to be the richest.

But too cool! Knew Dolphins were good for something better than just getting caught in Japanese nets!

They have amazing eye sight abilities as well. When they put their head out of the water the eye automatically re-adjusts for the air refractive index and they can see just as well above water as below it.
Very remarkable animals, we better kill them all.

Yes, research sometimes takes us in directions and to discoveries the scientists hadn't anticipated.
