Face of 49-Million-Year-Old Spider Revealed in 3-D.....

Face of 49-Million-Year-Old Spider Revealed in 3-D - Yahoo! News

Naturwissenschaften, confirms that the ancient spider is a member of the genus Eusparassus. These arachnids, also known as Huntsman spiders, live in the tropics and in Southern Europe today. From leg to leg, they can grow to a size of almost a foot (0.3 meters). Huntsman spiders are non-aggressive and non-toxic to humans, but they can deliver a painful bite.

The ancient spider fossil, which is housed in the Berlin Natural History Museum, is buried in a darkened chunk of amber and is barely visible. Using a method called X-ray computed tomography, researchers from Germany and the United Kingdom created three-dimensional images and movies of the spider inside the amber.

What was around when this giant arachnid crawled what is now central Europe? Another giant, it seems, as researchers recently reported a hummingbird-size ant lived in what is now Wyoming at the time.

My question would be.....how do we know those ones back then were non-aggresive? Thoughts?

Assumption, because the ones alive today are non-aggressive.
    if you believe wiki....
Huntsman spider - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While frequently very large – in Laos, Heteropoda maxima males can attain a legspan of 250–300 mm (9.8–11.8 in) As with all spiders, they use venom to demobilise or digest prey, but they are not deadly to healthy humans.[citation needed] They do bite if provoked, but the victim will suffer only minor swelling and localised pain, and will recover in a day or two. Some larger types resemble tarantulas. Huntsman spiders can generally be identified by their legs, which, rather than being jointed vertically relative to the body, are twisted such that the legs extend forward in a crab-like fashion.

I'm not sure how we could possible know if they were or weren't aggressive, but based on how they are now, its unlikely, but possible.

I love spiders and bugs, but about 2 feet past arms reach.

right, they're talking about current, modern day spiders. i didn't see anywhere where they said the same about their ancestors. see: "huntsman spiders ARE...". not "huntsman spiders WERE...".
