    A nostalgic moment

Someone brought up old computers on a different thread, and someone else had never heard of a Commodore (damn kid). I thought I would start this thread to relive the days gone by, when we actually had to program our own computers in Basic.

I remember when 124k memory was a big deal. I remember when computers started coming out with 1 mb of memory. I am looking for more storage, and this is what I came up with.

Western Digital 500GB External USB & eSATA Hard Drive - eBay (item 330210444092 end time Feb-14-08 11:43:43 PST)

For $124 I can get 50,000 times more memory than I had on my computer when I was 17.

I remember the first Macs, and not having to manually type in everything through DOS.

If you ever told me when I was a kid that I would one day have a work computer and a home laptop, I would have said you were crazy.

Strange how in this one field alone technology has advanced so much faster than all of the other science fields.

I remember our family going out and making a big £1,000 purchase to acquire our first proper pentium PC. 60mhz speed, 520 mb disk space, 8 mb RAM. We knew we'd hit the big time then.

You do have to remember though that even at the time computer technology was already much more advanced than what was commerically available, as I assume it still is now.

My first computer was a Commodore 620 which I purchased from Radio Shack. I can't remember the price but I do recall that the computer was an absolute piece of junk.

I remember my first computer.........a Timex Sinclair which I attached a cassette tape to to load programs. Took about 5 minutes to load about 8k or programming for the first flight sim program. Then at my business we bought an Osborne "portable", which weight about 20 pounds! When I got my first Atari I thought it can't get better than this 16 colors and a TWO floppy drives.

Ah yes the old DOS days, different boot configs, doing everything you could to save memory.

Now I know nothing about the operating systems.

The kid next door's father had an Osborne portable, with the tiny screen. That was a classy computer in those days.

With WordStar as I remember. We never did manage to do anything with it other than type a few letters. None of us knew WHAT to do with it back then other than use it as a fancy typewriter that could remember your letters but you had to be creative naming them as you only had 8 letters to use!
