DOJ Accuses Sheriff Arpaio of Pattern of Discrimination

Sucks to be Latino in his county. Do we really want to listen to this man talk about....anything?
After an investigation that lasted more than three years, the civil rights division of the Justice Department said in a 22-page report that the sheriff’s office has “a pervasive culture of discriminatory bias against Latinos” that “reaches the highest levels of the agency.” The department interfered with the inquiry, the government said, prompting a lawsuit that eventually led Mr. Arpaio and his deputies to cooperate.

“We have peeled the onion to its core,” said Thomas E. Perez, the assistant attorney general for civil rights, noting during a conference call with reporters on Thursday morning that more than 400 inmates, deputies and others were interviewed as part of the review, including Mr. Arpaio and his command staff. Mr. Perez said the inquiry, which also included jail visits and reviews of thousands of pages of internal documents, raised the question of whether Latinos were receiving “second-class policing services” in Maricopa County.

Even when alternative views are clearly wrong, being exposed to them still expands our creative potential. In a way, the power of dissent is the power of surprise. After hearing someone shout out an errant answer, we work to understand it, which causes us to reassess our initial assumptions and try out new perspectives. “Authentic dissent can be difficult, but it’s always invigorating,” Nemeth says.

Justice is finally served. The system sometimes works. I've been saying for more than a year this walking colostomy bag was going to get nailed, and here it is.

Feds detail pattern of discrimination by Arpaio

    Thanks, Fed.

    Yes, we should.

I obviously can't defend some of his actions, but his ideas about how we should not baby criminals and make them less comfortable and more productive was good stuff. So I do think we should take what we might view as good from him and discard what was bad. But we should definitely listen to him.

He has zip to offer but Nazi-style tactics, corruption, bigotry, intolerance and a completely incompetant grasp of law enforcement and incarceration.

I hear this is the worst case of racial profiling the head investigator has ever seen. But, the good news for Arpaio is he can claim it's retaliation for investigating Obama about his birth certificate. That's always good to get the right-wingers on your side.

This Sheriff has a duty to uphold the laws in his state and the American people who live there.

And he needs to do so fairly, in accordance with the law, and without prejudice.

Yep, and the federal government is holding him to that.
