From a pure cost perspective coins will last much longer than paper bills..so you don't have to replace them as often so money is saved from just the cost of producing and have to reproduce paper bills.
They are just talking about the one dollar coin aren't they?
Well whether we're printing dollars or making coins, the dollar is still going down the toilet. Stay with the bills I say, at least our worthless money will be light.
"This is revolution in the making
A ragtag movement set to takeover the nation
Now isn't that fun?
You just wanna make the world better, isn't that young?
Well, blessings to the youth then
And don't stop, until they let the truth in
Once there, never let it leave
And protect it, they'll catch it and never set it free" - Lupe Fiasco "The End of the World"
Coins are more cost-effective because they last longer so do not have to be replaced as often. A bottle of coke used to cost $0.05. For those of us who grew up in the mid-20th Century the present dollar is the equivalent of a quarter or less. Is anybody here in favour of a $0.25 or $0.05 bill, because to me that's what a buck is?

Picture this. It's a windy day..you stop at street vendor to buy a snack..you take your dollar bill out of your wallet and place it on the counter..the wind blows it away..you turn to go chase the one gram bill as it flies away and while pursuing it you step in a pothole and break your ankle leading to a whole lot of pain and months of recovery.
With dollar coin that situation will not happen. It won't blow away.

Of course, the simplest and most obvious solution to your scenario is for all dollar bills and all street vendor counters to be made of velcro. Surprised you didn't think of this.

It would cost the government much less to mint $1 coins, but for many small retailers it could be a pain in the butt. Retailers who sell a lot of inexpensive items will end up with a lot of those coins and they'd have to be carried to the bank to be deposited. On the other hand, a lot of other countries manage to do it. I say go with the coin.
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off. ~ Gloria Steinem
I certainly wouldn't want to carry that around. And speaking of this, I think you guys should get rid of pennies first. I COULD NOT BUHLEE the weight of billions of tiny and essentially useless coins I'd collected just during my first couple of days in the US.
