Bill Maher posthumously "un-baptizes" Mitt Romney's dead father-in-law

First: why did he do this?

He was refuting the argument propagated by the Christian Right that Atheism itself is a religion. He contends, of course, that Atheism is absolutely the opposite of religion ("Atheism is to religion what abstinence is to a good sexual position"), but then said if the Religious Right is so bent on classifying Atheism as a "religion", then Atheism should also be allowed rituals like other religions have.

And since Mitt Romney's father-in-law, an avowed atheist who heaped scorn upon religion in life, was posthumously baptized by the LDS church, Maher decided to "unbaptize" him.

Some may find it funny. Others may be insulted. But Maher is making a very specific point here:

YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS.

That is funny. Too bad religious zealots are so brainwashed that they don't get it.

    Haha.

Ok, answer me this, why would anyone BAPTIZE their own atheist relative after they die ? How disrespectful to ones own father.

i guess us non-christians will have to start wearing bracelets saying "in the event of death, do not baptize."

Personally i think maher's hilarious but i can see why people who don't jibe with his politics would despise him. he's after that reaction, i'm guessing.

Athiests should not be offended by baptism. I've been baptized, sage-smoke annointed, blessed and godknowswhat else. It does not offend me. In fact I appreciate the human sentiment.

Were you baptized against your wishes while you were dead? The truth is atheists are not offended by much of anything. They don't care. That's part of being atheists. They depend on scientific evidence not mythology and fantasy.

You have missed the point completely. It was YOUR choice to be baptized in life. The man was an athiest baptized after death, with his own family knowing full well his beliefs.

    Disrespectful.

I agree, but worth respectfully discussing with mormons themselves, for this reason, I created this thread about 2 weeks ago:

    Proxy baptisms
