What kind of people do you think politicians are? People with:

a. Strong faith that their view on politics represents what is absolutely right, and that other views are a result of not understanding and not having seen what they have seen themselves.

b. Strong wish for power, or wanting to be recognized for their talent, with a more pragmatic view on politics, and not having problems picking their stance on central issues according to what is more likely to benefit their popularity.

I wonder if you would find many local politicians and activists, as well as normal voters in category a, and most people with a chance of becoming president in category b. Are there other, more fitting descriptions? Or have I missed something?

Politicians are more like b. Mostly they are unprincipled liars and psychopaths. They only want to better their own position and are open to bribes and blackmail over the inevitable skeletons in their closets.
