    Winter Solstice

Here's a quote from the movie Zeitgeist

There is another very interesting phenomenon that occurs around December 25th or the winter solstice. From the summer solstice to the winter solstice the days become shorter and colder, and from the prospective of the northern hemisphere the sun appears to move south and get smaller and more scarce. The shortening of the days and the expiration of the crops, when approaching the winter solstice, symbolize the process of death to the ancients. It was the death of the sun. And by December 22nd the sun’s demise was fully realized for the sun having moved south continually for 6 months makes it to its lowest point in the sky. Here a curious thing occurs. The sun stops moving south…at least perceivably for 3 days… and during this 3 day pause, the sun resides int the vicinity of the southern cross, or crux, constellation. And after this time, on December 25th, the sun moves 1 degree this time north foreshadowing longer days warmth and spring. And thus it was said: the sun died on the cross, was dead for 3 days, only to be resurrected or born again. This is why Jesus and numerous other sun gods share the crucifixion 3 day death and resurrection concept.
I'll buy the laid to rest for 3 days, but what about the southern cross thing. I don't know much about constellations and can't easily find any info of where it appears in the sky during that time of the year. Or what area of the world you have to be in to see it properly. I dunno, anyone here know anything about it?

ok my main question is is this statement true "and during this 3 day pause, the sun resides int the vicinity of the southern cross, or crux, constellation."?

Does anyone know? I couldn't find anything on the net about it. My Google-Foo isn't strong today.

The sun is never in the Souther Cross, which is an asterism in the constellation Cygnus. The sun is in the sky opposite the sign of the zodiac which is at zenith at midnight.

Well , yea, but I think this is just spurious.

    Re: Winter Solstice

For the OP, "solstice" literally translates from Latin as "standstill." Literally, the sun's standstill, or the extreme positions of the sun at midsummer and midwinter when its eastern risings and western settings appear to take place in the same position on the horizon for three days in succession.

It's good to learn things about yourself.

Today I learned that I don't know the meanings of the words

    Southern Cross
    Asterism
    Cygnus
    zenith
    crux
    and spurious
