    Moral Blindness?

Moral Blindness, do we have it today? What I mean by that....is there something occuring today that is similar in your mind to the institution of slavery in the 1800's?

In America of the 1800's, there was only a small percentage of the population that were slave owners. Many of these owners kept their slaves on large plantations segregated from the general population. Even those living in the south during its heyday would not have had frequent contact with slaves. There was even less exposure to the institution in the north.

You had your abolitionists in the north screaming about the immorality of slavery, and yet life went on for most people, it wasn't of great concern, it didn't effect them personally, it was in effect a blindspot in their moral vision.

Do we have anything like that today?

    Some would say abortion....

Some would say gay rights and marriage...

Are there others and why do you think so...can we do anything about these moral blindspots?

Will generations of the future look back at us and wonder why people didn't put an end to it as we do slavery?

    Re: Moral Blindness?

I think there definately is a form of slavery upon us in the not so distant future which comes in the form of debt, punishment, and seperation.

I can't help but think of slavery when I see credit card commercials, or loan commercials. The people in the commercial itself don't give off that impression, hell no, they just got what they wanted immediately, fullfilled the impulse, but are now in debt and owe more than they borrowed. They don't show you that part. This debt can make or break a person or an entire family and often it is debt for simply living and not just impulse purchases. Debt alone can divide the haves and havenots further and further from one another until America itself is both a 1st world and 3rd world all in one.

Some say it is a matter of choice, but when it comes to living and providing, even with a full time job, sometimes there is no choice but to borrow.
