Did anyone watch the BBC show on PBS titled "The History of Disbelief"? It was utterly fantastic. It proved how all the founding fathers were atheist and just aclled themselves deist. My favorite part was how Washington as president would leave service before communion. The parson told him he was setting a bad example. Washington agreed and never attended church again, therefor setting a good example.
They went all the way back to Aristotle who said "gods are for tyrants to control the masses".
This was one of the best documentaries ever. Well written, well presented well sourced and cited.
The greatest thing about it is it explained just how paranoid the faithful are and why. With each new discovery the belief in god is shaken.
Example: The faithful believed the sun revolved around the earth. Galilao proved that to be wrong. The faithful believed the earth only 6,000 years old. Science proved them wrong. Each time the church and faithful scrambled to rejustify their god, redefine god. There are so many discoveries not accounted for in the bible that the bible is irrelevant. It isn't factual anyway as it is ambigious. As ambigious as a newspaper Astrology prediction.
I hope they reair the program or it is available for purchase. It's brilliant!
