Many people wish to defend the so-called sanctity of marriage.
But first let's establish the parameters of this argument. What exactly defines a marriage? And refrain from using the legal definition.
In simple terms, a marriage is an exchange of property, a contract if you will. In the past this was an exchange between the groom and the parents of the bride (hence the "giving away" part of the ceremony). Nowdays it is more an agreement to joint ownership and management of property.
So what about it is so sanctimonious? Why isnt say, exchanging money for a pair of sunglasses a sacred rite?
