Ky. church ordains sex offender as minister

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A tiny Louisville church's newest minister is a gifted music leader and popular among its three dozen members.

Mark Hourigan is also a sex offender. Almost a decade ago, long before he joined the flock at the City of Refuge Worship Center, he was convicted of sexually abusing an 11-year-old boy in central Kentucky. Hourigan served a five-year sentence and the 41-year-old was placed on Kentucky's sex offender registry for the rest of his life.

A former leader at the church along with an abuse victims advocacy group say Hourigan is a risk to hurt another child and he should not have been placed in a position of authority.

Why do people always have to put qualifiers like 'Served their time' on poll options, leaving none of them as an actual representation of our views (or my view, anyway)?

Anyone should be allowed to be an ordained minister for the simple reason that only the church itself should have the right to decide who it can and can't appoint. They can appoint a sex offender still in jail if that's really what they want to do.

Asking the question about a 'sex offender' is a bit problematic as well. I have big problems with sex offender registers, as in most people's eyes it simply means 'rapist paedophile list'. Axctual sex offenders registers include people in there for all sorts of sexual offences, including ones that wouldn't be an offence under any rational legal system. The example that always stuck in my mind was that of Robert Stewart, who was disturbed by cleaners in the privacy of his hostel bedroom mid intercourse with a bicycle (his own, I hurry to point out).

OK, how do you have sex with a bicycle? One would think anything with a chain and a sprocket would be REALLY off limits.

While I agree about the so-called list and who constitutes a real threat, in this case, the this man was 31 years old and was convicted and molesting an 11 year old boy.

This dude should be locked up. A 31 years old knows better, and if he doesnt, he doesnt need to be on the streets with our kids. And certainly be in a position of authority in a church.

Sex crime is a perfect example of how the collective opinion in society is often wrong. Regarding child abuse and watch lists, the general public knows dick about the nature of the problem, and would rather grind their axes while they pompously stand on their pedestals than actually understand the reality of the problem.

And the misconceptions are rampant, since the public has largely eschewed any notion of understanding while sectioning off a group of people to never be understood, studied or rehabilitated. That is the true disaster here, for the victim and society and large. I will go as far to make the case that this line of thinking actually exacerbates the problem, and ultimately creates more victims.

The common misconception is the lack of seeing the difference between pedophilia, which is a sexual/mental disorder, and the act of child abuse.

The kneejerk teabagging of reason and logic while shooting out self righteousness isn't going to protect more people from sexual crime. Understanding the problem and working toward a different approach is the only way to the curbing of this type of behavior.

It does not matter if he served his time. What matters is if he is a changed person. I saw nothing in the article that told us he is changed.

As a person who has counseled sex offenders before I would never let my children be under his supervision.
