A bag of Cheetos, emptied, leaves behind a greasy plastic bag which if not left to rest in static landfills for ten thousand years, will decompose over the next hundred or so into an oily slick of waste. As I contemplate this, I see all the reasons for this bag: it is cheaper, it seals food well, it is brightly-colored. And then I wonder about the one good reason for not having it, which is that it depresses us to know we are so destructive, and leave the world in worse condition than we encountered it. Banning plastic waste would remove some jobs, would shatter some dreams, and might cause inconvenience, but wouldn't it be better to have healthier... souls?
