Stephen Colbert: According to Rand Paul, anyone who listens to Rand Paul should be arrested

Stephen Colbert lampooned Kentucky Senator Rand Paul (R) on The Colbert Report for suggesting that anyone who attends a speech from someone who advocates the violent overthrow of the government should be put in prison.
“I’m not for profiling people on the color of their skin or their religion… but if someone is attending speeches from someone who is promoting the violent overthrow of our government, then that’s really an offense we should be going after,” Paul said on The Sean Hannity Show. “They should be deported or put in prison.”
Colbert noted that the U.S. Constitution protects freedom of speech, not “freedom of listen.” He pointed out that Paul’s proposal would mean anyone who attended Paul’s speeches would be arrested.

I'm curious as to Mikey has to say about 'ol Rand.
Video , as usual, is a must see.

I said this in another thread, I think Rand just doesn't think it through before opening the mouth. Seems like a good guy who just didn't realize what he was saying, obviously benefit of doubt. I don't know a lot about the guy to judge him politically beyond that.

Stephen nailed him to the wall though.

Come on. If Rand really understood what was coming out of his mouth, he wouldn't have said in the location he was at the time. If he would, then screw that guy.

I invested in this guy. Man I must be stupid because what he is now spouting does not represent me or my money.

Well, he came out against the Patriot Act and Reid tried to paint him as soft on terrorism. Ultimately he was thinking in terms of bolstering his reputation with respect to terror and (I BELIEVE) he was trying to pidgeonhole a Brandenburg "imminent lawless action" fact pattern into the conversation. Most of what I have heard him say has been actually EXTREMELY protective of free speech; so I would tend to view that statement as more of an aberration rather than an indicator of what he stands for. Hell, he doesn't even think the Civil Right Act is constitutional because it would violate the I Amendment (association) rights of those discriminating in commerce.

    Anything to discredit...

Evidently, as with those at many media outlets, including the HuffingtonPost, you did not look for Rand Paul's clarification before you wrote this. He said in an interview on the Mandy Connell Show that he does NOT want to lock people up solely for attending objectionable speeches, but rather that he thinks it could be taken into account in obtaining warrants against them (in fact, note that he had said their speech attendance should only be "indirectly taken into account" a couple sentences before the controversial line in that very interview) and that the end result could be imprisonment or deportation (since he was, in context, talking about people in the United States on visas).

Capitalism doesn't work for lazy imbeciles who refuse to grow up. That's one of it's greatest strengths, actually.
