Talapia is cheap but it does taste better if you soak it in lemon juice first. If you are going to fry it, put louisiana hot sauce and mustard on the filets before breading. Also some Talapia is beter than others. I think most of it imported from China or India.

Thanks for the tip, I'm on a pretty strict diet (which is why I was forced to choke it down in the first place) but the lemon juice and I'm pretty sure the mustard will be fine, but definately no breading.

I am on the same diet.

Try this intead. Soak it for five or ten minutes in lemon juice, then coat one side of the filet it with a mix of garlic powder & whatever other spice mix you like and then mix some mustard & hot sauce, finely chopped garlic, & maybe some black pepper or whatever spice you want with a couple of tablespoons of olive oil. Put a little bit of cooking oil in a stainless steel skillet and heat it up and put the spiced side of the fillet down. Then brush or spoon the olive oil/mustard/hot sauce mixture ontop of the fish. Don't turn it over, but instead crank up the broiler on your oven and stick the pan in there. You can use whatever spice variation you want but the idea is that when you get done, you still have a nice coating of mustard and spices on top of the fish.

Talapia = poo-eating bottom feeding fish.

They use talapia to clean the tanks of farm raised sea bass.

So? Catfish are also bottom feeders, and I've had spectacularly good blackened catfish. And while they're not "fish" in the strictest sense, shrimp, crab, and lobster are also bottom feeders.

I always assume there is a better chance of getting actual fresh fish in most restaurants around here because of the catfish farms in the area.

There is no question that there are better fish than catfish and talapia but they are not cheap eather. From what I have read it is healthy to eat fish several times a week so I am trying to do it.

Properly Blackened Catfish is good. It is good fried also. The main thing is that it is fresh.

Talapia is okay. It's rather bland actually so bluesman's olive oil/mustard/hot sauce recipe looks like it would work very well to liven it up.

Damn after reading this thread I will put this crap on the list of stuff to not eat. I actually had to look it up.

I guess my question is, why would someone even eat this stuff. As poisonous as hot dogs are, something else on my list, they gotta better for you than this.
