So last year I didn't put a drop of water on my lawn. I have a lawn that features spots of dead, brown grass, crab grass, dandelions and clover. Anyone know how to fix this?

Water, fertilizer and weed/crabgrass killer.

Lawns are incredibly wasteful. Granted, your description of your current yard sounds extremely unattractive but If I were you I'd plant lots of shrubs and perennials, plus a veggie garden instead of investing in a useless expanse of grass that requires too much water and too much fertilizers and weedkillers and gas to run your lawn mower. But Americans love their aristocratic lawns. Go figure.
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off. ~ Gloria Steinem
We had the same problem Sparta.....racked out all the dead shit, threw down weed and feed fertilizer. Ours got kind bare with some bare patches. So threw down some seeds. It all grew back. And you know Chicago weather..... so it should work for you.

We hire a lawn service to take care of aerating, fertilizing, and putting down weed killer. I've discovered that after a lawn has been cared for as such, it takes about two years before the nice-lawn effect fades. In other words, you can save hundreds of dollars by purchasing such a service every other year, or every third year.

Oh i forgot....throw down some grub killer. Keep the moles down to a minimum.
Same here....i have been building up the bank i have over a creek.....I built a burm around some trees and then put a bench out there. When the trees are in full bloom and it is raining lightly you can be under them and not get wet. Then next to the burm i took a pool ladder somebody was throwing away and i built a small burn around it, which made like a set of stairs to get to the top part of my back yard. It was one of those nice ladders for an big deck type pool.
Then on the one side of behind the garage down on the bank I put in all these flat bricks that were getting thrown away from a miniture golf course they were tearing down. On the side behind the house i took pallets and buried them upside down and then nailed down treated lumber over it. This was all done with knowing the creek can overflow. So thats where i built the hieght of the burm. Then when I was replacing some of my driveway. We busted out the concrete and used all the pieces to line the edge of the bank with it.....it increased the value of my property by 20k. Using nothing but some garbage construction materials and dirt..... now my wife has begun putting in the ground cover for the angle to the bank up to our back yard.
Its like Meditation for me.....plus cutting the grass gets me away from the ole lady. lol
