For the record, I am in Marseilles right now. Been here for 2 weeks with a few more days until I finish my work.

All I can say is I have had a wonderful time even though I have worked every day but 2. Marseilles is gritty but still beautiful, and the surrounding areas are spectacular.

One thing I didn't expect: The people here are the most hospitable friendly, funny, helpful bunch you could ever expect to meet. Really. Marseilles has a secret, I don't know if is true for all of France... they love Americans but don't want to show it! If you are polite and friendly they will take you in.

If you are ever in the area the Calanque are not to be missed.

Quebec is like that too, they're aren't going to mess with their livelihood. It can be a little different in Paris. Its not that people weren't nice, they were just busy and American tourists are a pretty routine thing I suspect. Glad you're having a good time. Good grief, whenever you travel you should work your ass off to try and have a good time.

Comparing a croque monsieur to a grilled cheese sandwich is like comparing the finest Belgium beer to an Old Milwaukee that was opened and sat out all night at room temperature. [/quote]

and drop some ashes and a cigarette butt in the can and you got yourself one damn fine beverage.

Sorry to read about the punks at the cafe. It happens here too, Spanish speakers will deride others who don't speak Spanish if they believe they don't.

We Americans really should require a proficiency in a second language to obtain a college degree. I know many PhD programs do, we should just bump the requirement down to the undergrad level. On edit: and that 2nd language should start at the 1st grade level
