Thanks to all that responded so far. I'm a low profile person when I travel.

This is the apt. Right in the heart of town on the little island in the river Seine. What is really neat is a famous guy lived here.

Stop it! You're making me want to drop everything and just move.

I may have to spend a week or 2 in Marseilles, France next month for my job. Has anyone ever spent any time there? The trip adviser web sites say Marseilles stinks and is crime-ridden. I have to work most days but I would like to see what's worth seeing, not just what is on the travel Wiki.

La Bonne Mère, il's the great cathedral of Marseille, to visit absoluutely by day, avoid at night.

In Marseille, there's a lot of things to visit, the quarter Le Panier, (Basket), old asian quarter, may be arabian also .

Out M., to vist Les Calanques and Cassis, beautifull landscapes near the sea, blue sea and blue sky ... Gorges du Verdon, Le Lubéron at 1 hour from M. by car.
When it comes to GOP stupidity, there's no need to make stuff up.

You, and more importantly your wonderful and gracious mother-in-law, are most appreciated! Thank you very much.

I have a day "to acclimate" before I start work. "The Good Mother" was already on my list for that morning. They say it has the best view of Marseilles and on to the sea in the city. I won't be driving, but I can take a train ride to beautiful seascapes... that would be perfect for a day trip.

    Thanks again.

For the record, I am in Marseilles right now. Been here for 2 weeks with a few more days until I finish my work.

All I can say is I have had a wonderful time even though I have worked every day but 2. Marseilles is gritty but still beautiful, and the surrounding areas are spectacular.

One thing I didn't expect: The people here are the most hospitable friendly, funny, helpful bunch you could ever expect to meet. Really. Marseilles has a secret, I don't know if is true for all of France... they love Americans but don't want to show it! If you are polite and friendly they will take you in.

If you are ever in the area the Calanque are not to be missed.

    See?

It's amazing what the rightwing talking heads will make a people believe.

You should stop by the middle east on your way home, I bet those folks aren't so bad either.

    I can't wait. Although I picked a different apt.
