    Attn: Hunters

Has anyone done any hunting with a muzzleloader? I am going deer hunting this weekend with a muzzle loader for the first time. I shot one for the first time today and was very impressed with its simplicity and accuracy. I am not even sure what kind it is as I borrowed it from a friend. I am now looking to purchase one and I see a remington at Cabelas for a good price after rebates. Anyone out there with a bit of experience in this kind of shooting have any pointers as to what I should be looking for?

No lube sabots are my recommendation, faster to load, high velocity.

I am not familiar with those, as my only experience was today and they were no lube, at least I didn't have to lube them.

Before going to Cabela's, I would recommend going to your local gun store and seeing what they have on consignment. You can sometimes get great deals on muzzle loaders as they are not in super high demand. Stick with the .50 caliber as that is the most common.

My only experience is with a .50 cal and I liked it, so I will stick with that. Iexpected a recoil like my twelve gauge, but got hardly anything. I will check locally, although we have a very small market for that sort of thing as we are a very small town.

I've fired a .50 but the closest my gun collection comes to black powder shooting is a .45-70 Quigley Sharps from Pedersoli.

Personally I like the blunderbuss with black powder, lots of noise, not much accuracy, but a big cloud of smoke.

My advice to anyone hunting is not to shoot any creature that is unwilling to be shot. Their lives are just as important to them as your life is to you. Thank you.

The deer I shoot are always willing. I think it is awful nice of them to be willing to sacrifice their lives for the sake of less cvar-deer accidents and some darn fine food on the table. I tell you, we have the nicest deer in the country.
