Doctor King, this is for you.

Today is a day that will live forever in our hearts. This was the day when after generations of oppression the vision of one of the greatest men ever to live became reality. Doctor Martin Luther King spread a great message of tolerance, equality, and hope for the future. The results of today's election for me at least stirs the same feeling in my heart that this great man evoked. Alongside the many others who fought and died for liberty, equality, and fraternity; this victory truly belongs to him. It marks a beginning of a new age as did the election of 1932. In many ways this is a culmination of the civil rights movement, but in others it is also a new beginning. To Doctor King, all I have to say is may you rest in peace.

Sorry. Dr. King was a Republican. At the time he made his famous speeches, the Democrats were turning fire hoses and attack dogs on his followers, and expounding publicly on their certain belief that Blacks were physically, morally, spiritually and intellectually inferior.

Somehow, I doubt he'd be as happy as you think.

Would you mind not bringing partisanship into this? This thread isn't about parties, this is about civil rights.

Yes well there's been an ideological flip on behalf of both parties since King. Reminds me of something I read where someone was bashing conservatives for flying the csa flag, saying the csa went on to be democrats.

The man just elected as president believes that rights are bestowed by government, Dr. King believed that they were bestowed by God.

I doubt he'd be as happy with this election as you'd imagine.

Again, it doesn't matter what Obama believes. Doctor King was fighting for equality and opportunity; the fact that after 200 years of white men a black man was elected to the highest office in this country is his greatest victory.

Inquiries into Obama's past or qualifications were routinely labeled as racist. In other words, serious vetting of the candidate was disallowed upon racial grounds. "Doctor King was fighting for equality and opportunity."

I doubt that Dr. King would have been as pleased with this election as you might imagine.

If you don't get it, which you obviously don't, then this thread isn't for you. You fail to understand the historical significance of this election beyond your conservative whining.

Oh, but I do get it! Shall I explain it for you?

Dr. King's movement has bee usurper by people whose polices and principles would have revolted him.

The bulk of the people Dr. King sought to emancipate and empower have been duped by a demagogue who spouts lies and platitudes and is likely to deliver them in to vastly greater poverty and servitude to a centralized authority upon which they will be dependent.

The fact that the nation elected a man of color is significant. it was also significant when the first blacks and first black woman were appointed to cabinet positions a few years ago. But since those appointments were made by a Republican, their historical significances were ignored.

This election is a travesty of the principles of Dr. King. To ascribe it to his honor is a best sadly inappropriate.

    Carry on.
