Hyenas start fighting from birth, especially if 2 females are born, with one usually killing the other. If there are one of each sex the male will usually survive as he is no competition for the females. No other female will ever suckle a sisters young, and should the mother not return, these young will be left to die.
Hyena females are difficult to distinguish from males, due to strikingly similar genitalia; including the females’ pseudo scrotum and penis. High levels of testosterone in female explain their dominating aggressiveness. This has led to many Hyena characters who are, or are assumed to be, hermaphrodites. Males are much smaller and submissive and will even run away from a young cub. Biologists speculate that hyenas evolved a Matriarchal social structure because it is in the best interests of the female hyena to dominate the male hyena because it provides no assistance in rearing the cubs. Many associate the hyena with sexual deformity, prostitution, and deviant sexual behavior.
While the Hyena mainly scavenge carrion, they will gang together to steal prey killed by other predators. Negative associations have generally stemmed from their tendency to scavenge graves for food. As such, many associate hyenas with gluttony, uncleanliness, and cowardice. On the dark side, the Hyena has been known to attack young humans and eat them. However, when attacked, by others, it puts it's tail between the legs and tries escaping in a awkward half-sitting position.
Undigested bones / hairs are vomited out and they roll in it, if they can beat the rest of the clan members to it. Their retching attracts the attention of the rest of the clan hoping that they too can also roll in it.
Communication consists of grunts, whines, squeals and the famous giggle. Male Hyenas do not raise their legs when urinating as male or dominant canids do. They have a "greeting" ceremony whereby they sniff and lick the others anal sack and genitals.
