I said the exact same thing to someone earlier today as we were driving past some gorgeous blooming trees.
Speaking of lilacs. I'm not sure how important they were around here prior to May 1945, but ever since then, they've been associated with the end of WW2 (in Europe that is, obviously). Soviet troops were (literally) welcome with lilacs in Prague (very much unlike the next time they came, in 1968). In fact, I remember hearing an expert say that ever since 1945, lilacs in Prague have bloomed during the first week of May. Last year, when I was ill and had nothing better to do, I watched them, and I couldn't help noticing that lilacs in my street started to bloom on April 20, which is Hitler's birthday. I figured the lilacs had switched sides all of the sudden or something. So I watch them realllllllly close this year, but they aren't
quite blooming as so far. Whew.
I love the scent too.
