Reported AIDS cases now exceed 90,000, of which more than 50,000 have died, and the Federal Centers for Disease Control estimates that the disease will kill 35,000 this year. Of the $2.2 billion in Federal spending on AIDS in 1989, $1.3 billion will be for research and prevention, the study indicated.
By comparison, the report said, the Government will spend $1.5 billion on research and prevention of cancer, which will kill 500,000 people this year, and $1 billion for heart disease, which will kill 777,000 Americans. In addition, it said, Federal support for such major health problems as stroke, high blood pressure and Alzheimer's disease will also drop behind AIDS spending.
