The demise of PC based gaming.....

    1995.....

The PC gaming world is thriving. DOS extenders have broken the 640K memory limit and there are a huge variety of flight, driving, strategy and shooting games to satisfy all tastes.

    Enter Windows 95..

At the time, I was on many Genie roundtables (discussion areas) arguing for DOS extenders and against the new Windows format.

Many developers had been told that Windows would be a gaming heaven, what with unified drivers and a stable gaming platform.

A few weeks later, the head on the Sierra software company wrote a lead editorial in a gaming magazine saying (paraphrased) - Gamers will have to upgrade to Windows 95 because they will have no choice --

    Yesterday,

Walked into a local Gamestop and guess what? No shelf space for PC games any more. There are probably millions of PC users who play games. But no shelf space.....

I guess Gates wants us to all get X-Boxes..... - Gamers will have to "upgrade" to X-Box... because they will have no choice... -

You PC gamer type people need to embrace the positive social impact of multi-port controlers, a bag of weed, and a large screen tv.

We have 12 hour LAN parties for the social aspects and drug abuse... In fact, I host many of them myself!

I think the main reason PC gaming is going down is due to the increase of console gaming among the average joe. PC gaming has pretty much always been a narrow demographic. You need to know you system to know whether you can play a game or not. Not everyone knows this kind of info. With a console, it's plug and play. Every 360 game will work with EVERY 360. Not so when your looking at PC's, and this causes a lot of people to back away from PC gaming.

Developers are going to aim their products towards the larger market. More games are going to be made for consoles only. Reasons like that are why I have started to move away from PC gaming. And now that I got my keyboard and mouse working on the 360. I really could care less.

Multiplayer console games are on small servers. 16 ppl max or so I have found. Nothing like runnin and gunnin in a PC server filled with 40 plus crazy NooBs !

There are millions of PC gamers. There should be shelf space at the gaming store.

I agree there should be at least some shelf space. I wonder if Valve has anything to do with this. I bet digital distribution is going to kill off retailers like EB Games.

Yeah but the best servers I ever played for CS were about the size of 16 players. More than that that and it starts to get laggy. Meh, maybe that's just due to my geographic location.

Tho console servers suck cause you can't go back to the same one with the same regulars. That was something I really liked about CS, talking among your selfs after you die.

I go to Fry's to buy my games. Never a shortage of shelf space there and they have a crap ton of games. PC games that is. I don't play console games at all, I hate the controllers.
