Well, if you're asking for SINGER and it needs to the THE MOST quintessential country singer, that would have to be George Jones, hands down.
Cash was a great, but Jones' voice is better. Of course Hank Williams (the original) was incredible, too, but Jones took it a step or two further. Buck Owens was a good all-around talent, but Jones' voice wins out for sounding the most like a glass of bourbon.
But I like a lot of the ones listed above, mostly from the old school when they still called it "country & western."
Carrie Underwood will be a legend when her career ends.
