Hope you enjoy it - I had a creative urge, and wrote this as a result in about 40 minutes.
It began when mankind sought to combine man and machine totally. To create a sentient being at once machine but ruled over by a conscious entity. The first experiments, carried out deep within the laboratories of the moon, far from all ethical thought, wrought little success. Hideous creatures of dismembered humans and dead machinery littered the dump-wards. The human body itself could cope with the implants, the trauma of the operation. The human mind could not. The brain was not built to comprehend the machine without a device to operate it externally. More than one mind would be needed.
Ten thousand of the most intelligent, most strong willed and most resilient humans were drafted in from through out the colonies. They went through screening, their personalities erased and rebuilt. Any weakness was destroyed until they collectively became the essence of the machine.
Their bodies became fused, their neural-pathways linked. Soon the only physical part of the that remained were their brains; wired into the device known as the Krypt, there to become integrated with the machine. As the earthly life of the little matter that remained of those humans died, so they became more dependant upon each other. Carefully guided by the scientists that condemned them, the ten thousand became one. Their blank minds were re-written, encoded with all the wisdom of the ages. New levels of knowledge and emotion embedded within them as they became more centralized. In this way a single conscious was born.
As this conscious was born, it realised it was dieing, the little flesh that gave it life rapidly dwindling. The scientists had still not managed to fuse the conscious with the machine, and so the Krypt became a life support system as opposed to a transferring platform. As time ran out, the education of the entity as it had become known was furthered. The concept of religion on philosophy was introduced as the last stage of development, as the last remnants of any individual thought within the entity died, and it became one mind, as opposed to many together at last.
This was to be the turning point for the project, and ultimately humanity. Science had long ago dismissed the soul as part of the human imagination, much less any latent powers hidden within the human psyche. Even at this stage, much of the mind was unmapped, but it seemed that the fusion of so many minds into one collective thought process unlocked them. The entity garnered immeasurable power on both the intellectual, but also the spiritual level. The shock of the fusion threw open evolutionary doorways long since closed, or not yet meant to be opened by humanity within the mind, the birth cries of this mind echoed though out the galaxy. Many of the humans within thousands of miles of the hidden laboratories were driven to insanity by the shock of the event. Space itself seemed to warp as a new dimension, and new element of physics was created. The Krypt was torn open and a man stood in the centre of the rubble.
The man, larger and more perfect than any that came before him knew all of mankind’s knowledge. He know their history, their flaws and their strengths. He knew the goal to which they had strived. He was imbued with limitless knowledge and power, and saw himself as humanities saviour. He named himself Regiman Lucis, quite literally meaning guiding light, and sought to escape from the prison of his devastated laboratory to enlighten and lead humanity.
When Regiman reached the surface he was shocked and distressed. He had only been educated with knowledge gathered at the inception of the project to create the perfect man-machine, which was almost a century ago. Not only had civilization undergone massive change and upheaval since then, but it seemed apparent that his birth has shattered humanity. Everything mankind had achieved had crashed down around him, as man turned on man and war for what was left ensued. Every colony was pitted against the next, while war erupted within the colonies themselves. Civil war broke out across all human lands, leaving Regiman alone against the cause he wanted to achieve.
Mankind had long since left the solar system, and now inhabited over a hundred and fifty worlds. Still extra terrestrial life eluded explorers, all planets they came across were uninhabitable by natural causes, but mankind had perfected the art of terraforming a planet, perfected out of desperation as Earth itself, after a combination of both man made and natural incidents ruined the planet’s biosphere and burned the atmosphere from the sky. It was by harnessing the energy of the systems star to speed up their technology and methods that would be otherwise unfeasible that allowed this rapid expansion and advancement. Humanities expansion had been carefully planned, but corruption had started to spread. Man’s empire had been brought into chaos, and was on the bring of was even before the coming of Regiman.
Unknown to mankind a new threat lurked in the darkness of space; a new realm, brought into being by Regiman’s birth fused with our own. This was a realm of thought, belief and emotion. The fears and lusts and loves and evils that inhabited the human brain gave life to this realm and fed it. Some became strong and were gifted powers similar to those of Regiman. To others it physically changed them. To others it tore their minds from their bodies and gave them a form of pure energy. Anything was possible with this new dimension; it was a new level of physics. It had always existed, much as mankind’s reality had always existed, but it had been apart, no creature in existence having the ability to cross the gap. All life had the potential; imagination, individuality and reasoning were, and always have been unexplainable by the laws of our reality, because they are the outer most limits of another reality. All dimensions are fused at a certain level, and this dimension, that of emotion and imagination was no exception. It merged with all conscious things, and was a tool and spark of evolution. It will be forever unknown weather evolution would have naturally bridged the gap, but the creation of Regiman Lucis and the fusion of ten thousand minds not only crossed the gap in a single instance, but tore a rip through the boundary between the two dimensions, letting both now merge freely.
This new energy in the universe brought power to those who had none before, and allowed for a new form of war fare. With this, anything was possible. The mind could be detached from the body and placed within any object desirable, even a machine, the scientists original objective complete, while the energy could change the body; make it perfect, give it wings, give strength, give immortality. To others it gave madness and drove them insane, their minds too small to comprehend their own greatness and thus flayed as their punishment. To the majority it did not effect or even touch; many closed their minds to this new presence in the universe, their thoughts shrouded by fear and the instinct of survival among new and challenging times.
Regiman Lucis left man’s territories in search of answers and salvation. Before he could save humanity he must save himself. He left the solar system aboard one of the large science vessels in one of the moons space docks, he took with him all his knowledge and lore, with the aim of creating a new order and a new future.
No-one except Regiman would every know who and what he encountered in this time, although it became known he met other races and beings all across the galaxy, and that he did not see another human for almost a thousand years. Over this time he is known to have unlocked even more secrets. He honed himself and built an army of soldiers based on his own genetic template. He learned that the other realm was known about and used by other races, however his birth had shattered many civilizations, and caused much trouble. Only the most powerful races survived or coped with the changes, yet his coming would change the galaxy for ever.
He returned to Earth’s territories one thousand and twenty eight years to the day since his creation, to find the colonies now established empires and kingdoms across the stars. War was rife. Poverty and superstition reigned supreme. Humanity had become a degraded shadow of its former greatness. Many once beautiful terraformed worlds were one again barren rock, their atmosphere stripped away by nuclear war on an intergalactic scale. It was to this that Regiman Lucis and his armies were welcomed. His first target was Earth, the cradle of humanity. From there the rest of the human race would be saved.
