    Greatest QB in the NFL

Speaking of great QB's who was the greatest QB ever?

Joe Montana, Otto Graham, Bart Starr, Johnny Unitus, Roger Staubach, Tom Brady, Terry Bradshaw, Fran Tarkenton, Dan Marino, John Elway, Troy Aikman, Peyton Manning, Sammy Baugh, Y.A. Tittle, Norm Van Brocklin

    You decide.

Re: Greatest QB in the NFL

That's tough, I don't think I could pick one. If I wanted to win one game from start to finish I'd take Steve Young or Johnny U. If I had to pick any person in history to protect a lead I'd take Joe Montana, and If I had to pick a QB to lead me from behind I'd take Bret Favre or Elway.

Well, the most dominant QBs had to have been Steve Young and Sammy Baugh. But I think I'd go with Baugh as the greatest QB ever. I think that would change in a few years after Tom Brady wins another few super bowls.

Re: Greatest QB in the NFL

If I could only pick one it would have to be Otto Graham.

The Browns appeared in 10 straight championship games. The modern football public is amazed by the Bills of the early 1990s who appeared in four straight Super Bowls. The Browns played for a championship every year from 1946 to 1955. They won seven times (’46, ’47, ’48, ’49, ’50, ’54, ’55). The Vince Lombardi Packers appeared in six title games in eight years, winning five.
The Browns dominated two leagues. Cleveland won all four AAFC championships before the league merged with the NFL in 1950. The Browns proved they were no junior-league fluke with a 10-2 record and a victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the 1950 NFL championship game. Groza’s last-second field goal gave Cleveland the 30-28 victory. The Browns made it to the NFL title game but lost each year from 1951 to 1953. They returned to championship form in 1954 and 1955.
The 1948 Browns were undefeated. Like the 1972 Dolphins, the 1948 Browns went 14-0 in the regular season and won their league title. But because it happened in the AAFC, the NFL does not recognize the undefeated 1948 Browns -- the only other team to go through both the regular and postseasons without a loss. (The Dolphins played three postseason games and went 17-0; the Browns played just one postseason game and went 15-0).

Graham was the greatest winner in pro football history. Tom Brady is the greatest winner in football today but he couldn’t hold a candle to Graham, who led the Cleveland offense during the entire 1946-1955 period. The Browns posted a 105-17-4 (.861) regular season record over those 10 years – gaudy even by the standards of college dynasties. Graham padded his stats with a 9-3 postseason record, four AAFC championships and three NFL championships. History shows that Graham was the glue that held together the Browns dynasty. The Graham-less 1956 Browns went 5-7 -- their first losing record -- and the Browns have made only three more title-game appearances since his departure. They lost to Detroit, 59-14, in 1957; beat Baltimore, 27-0, in 1964; and lost to Green Bay, 23-12, in 1965. The Browns have not been back to an NFL title game since.

Otto Graham, very impressive stats. Any Idea how tall he was, his playing weight, or what sort of offense he ran? Even if he ran an offense? I don't know about selecting a guy who ended his carreer in 1955. I have an Uncle, his name is John J. Kelley, who once held the course record in the Boston Marathon, finished second a hand full of times, competed on two Olymic teams, and basically brought road running in to the modern age. He got in to the sport at a time when runners would just go balls out and try to hang on, he is recognised as the first man to add strategy to the sport. If I had one race to win, I'd be a fool to go with him.

    OTTO GRAHAM Class of 1965
    Quarterback >>> 6-1, 196
    (Northwestern)
    1946-1955 Cleveland Browns (AAFC/NFL)

Otto Everett Graham, Jr.. . .College tailback, switched to T-quarterback in pros.

When Paul Brown began organizing the Cleveland Browns team to play in the new All-America Football Conference (AAFC), the first player he signed was Otto Graham, a tailback from Northwestern University. Brown eyed Graham as the perfect quarterback for his new pro team.
Graham planned to concentrate on basketball at Northwestern. He was "discovered" playing intra-mural football as a freshman and although he became a fine passer in three varsity seasons, he had no experience in the T-formation. Brown never wavered in his decision. "Otto has the basic requirements of a T-quarterback – poise, ball-handling and distinct qualities of leadership."
It turned out the coach was right. Once Graham joined the Browns, he not only quickly mastered the mechanics of the T but he became the heart of a dynamic football machine. With Graham at the controls, the Browns won four straight AAFC titles and compiled an awesome 52-4-3 record.

Since I was five when he retired, I've never seen him play but those stats are pretty hard to argue with. In my time, I'd pick Steve Young or Montana but for sheer excitement, ya can't beat Tarkenton or Tittle. I still remember that Tittle to Dell Shaufner combo. Those are my earliest memories of watching football.

In my opinion, to date Montana was the greatest quarterback, but I am biased.

In my opinion, Brady will go down as one of the greatest ever, if not the greatest.

Interestingly, or not, this was my math teacher in high school.

No question, Joe Montana, for versatility under pressure and brains
