Why Political Hotwire continues to be my fave ...

At another place, I received infraction points for posting in response to this, in respect of the USA, by another member.

I'm just afraid for the continued existance of the best form of gov't ever conceived thru out all of history. Can you imagine the world without us? Tyranny and anarchy would rein.
To which I responded with a very polite post which nonetheless questioned these claims. This resulted in a string of posts which talked about people who were ungrateful to the USA for all she had done for them. The usual - you owe your freedoms to us - sort of stuff.

So I then posted this -

Well, I'm sorry so many of you seem to think I am an ungrateful European who is attacking America. I was actually just addressing the immoderate claims of a particular poster.

Where I was brought up, it is not acceptable to boast about being the best in your class, your school, or in the world (even if you have good reason to suspect that you are). Perhaps this is not so in the United States, I don't really know.

None of the Americans I met were boastful people, in fact quite the opposite, so I suspect that our cultures are not that different.

What I find difficult to understand is the hyper-sensitivity to criticism where none was implied or intended.

This is part of the reason why I am reluctant to post as often on this board as I do on another American forum.
This was immediately followed by a points infraction for personal attack, which limits my access to parts of that board.

That, in itself, is not a problem, as I do not go there all that often, but I find the response a little unreasonable. I was not aware of personally attacking anyone, just saying that I disagreed with the claims of one poster.

I am not going to storm off in a fit of pique, :dramaqueen: coz there are some very nice people on that board, but I am certainly not going to bother to put the same effort into any posts I might make there, as I do here.

But basically, I am asking the members, and the mods, here if, on the evidence presented, they feel that my post was an infractable offence. What say you? Give your honest opinion, please.

Leo, I wonder if that happened in the same forum where I was attacked for making anti war comments on their veterans thread? How very American of them, eh?

Come on leo, admit you only go on that forum because you want a giggle at the responses to your baiting...

Nothing wrong with that, from the sound of it those responses would be pretty amusing...

No, honestly, I didn't even start the topic. And not everyone there is so extreme. But I didn't expect the mods to react like they did.

Like what constituted a 'personal attack' in my post? Saying his claims were immoderate? Like I've seen really bad language over there (and here sometimes) and I get infracted for using 'immoderate'???

    That is pretty ironic, actually...

Anyway, your use of the term was in relation to his comment, so it couldn't be a personal attack. You were wronged, man.... I'd write a very strongly worded letter to the editor of the Daily Mail....

Actually, was the responder a "moderator"? "Immoderate" then may have been taken as a personal sleight, even though you didn't intend it...

LOL! No, my family is middle-class, we would never write to the Daily Mail, it would have to be a strongly worded letter to The Times.

But thanks for instantly getting my point - I was careful not to make to comments about him personally. The 'immoderate' was in relation to his comments.

And I'm not so dumb that I can't work out that the mods were just looking for an excuse to infract me, coz I am seen (wrongly) as anti-American on that board.

I refuse to be run off by this childish crap, but I won't hold most of them in the same high regard as I hold the people here. But it's no biggie, I am just curious to hear what people think of the situation.

If yr talking about the place I think you are, then you have to look at it from the perspective of their *Big Tent* philosophy. The mods there work hard to protect their vunerable, sensitive, and might I add consistantly polite and respectful right-wingers from all those leftwingers with BDS and crafty America-hating foreign agitators like you. The only way to redeem yrself is to start threads saying how you think the conservatives are really good sorts, and turn around and start ragging on some leftwingers

I post regularly at Democratic Underground (and PH is my fave place that isn't DU) and DU has what I think are really strict rules against personal attacks. Even so, attacking another poster isn't allowed, while attacking another posters ideas is okay. You were talking about another posters claims, which falls into the second category, so it takes some extreme stretching on the part of whoever infracted you to see that as a personal attack...

It's the Internet mates... let's not take it too seriously. If people do attack you personally (how the hell does it apply... they don't know you!) either you reply in a civil manner to make him see some sense, or simply ignore it anyways.

Personally, I like PH, it's a good forum with a number of perspectives to understand, so it allows me to learn more about people and their reasoning over the news and other affairs.
