George Steinbrenner is a bitch and no one should take the kind of crap GS doles out, least of all one of the best Yankees coaches ever. Hopefully he can find another team where he will be treated with respect (but let's hope the team sucks and that he doesn't turn them into a better team than the Yankees...). :whistling:

He was a losing coach before becoming a Yankee and did good by the team and got himself some WS rings, something he never got as a player or a coach before donning the pinstripes.

It was a sad day when he said LAYTA!! but he deserves better treatment.

However.....thats probably the best offer anyone would have ever expected coming from Steinbrenner. They are getting soft. When I heard about all the support that Torre was getting from around the league, from politicians, players, etc.... my thought was that he was gone for sure. Steinbrenner always seemed to like to show everyone he was in charge. It did not matter who supported him or not it was George's decision. It really kind of surprised me that he was offered a contract at all.
And, if you step aside and look at it, it was a hell of an offer. I can see where Joe could take it as an insult, but it was still a base contract worth substantially more than any other manager, with incentives to about double what any other manager is making. Plus, if he won the ALCS next year, his salary the following year would have been 8 million bucks. That is a very generous offer considering the expectation of the Yankee franchise.
