Since I have been coming here (for over a year now) I hear a number of people talking tough about stuff like carrying guns, attacking and invading countries and killing people. Especially the 'lets kick ass, and kill the Muslims' brigade.
I wonder how many of these people have any experience of what it is like to have someone you care for die? How many of you have walked in the rain behind the coffin of your dad on a gun carriage when you were still in primary school? Have stood by the grave side while the twenty one gun salute is fired, knowing that inside that box is the person you like most in the world.
How many have sat in a darkened hospital room for hours holding the dead hand of an old lady whom you had known all your life, and who was your best friend?
And how many have seen a teenage school mate turn into an old man with no hair and a crumpled face? Have seen him literally crumble into this 'thing' which could no longer speak coherently, which had to wear nappies, and could only communicate with you by holding on to your hand, and which (mercifully) died in a few months.
Death isn't fun, it's horrible! Has anyone seen the light go out in another human being's eyes?
Look, it's great to play computer games where you waste the baddies, and nuke whole civilisations, but these are games, stuff kids play. Do any of those who talk tough know what killing someone means? Can they foresee the anger, and pain in their loved ones, and can they live with it?
I know loads of people think 'kicking ass' and 'wasting' people is macho, but it's not. A real man protects the weak, not bullies them. Someone with real balls nurtures life, not destroys it. It takes no courage whatsoever to pull a trigger, and it is the most cowardly act on earth if the person you are shooting is not similarly armed.
OK, this had to be said, and I've said it. Do your worst! :whistling:
