As to people who think baseball is boring, I don't get how they can possibly feel that way. I understand that to appreciate baseball you have to have patience and the desire to understand the game, but there is potential for the most difficult accomplishment of skill in any sport on every pitch. Every pitch is laced with drama, and in this game anything can happen. Can you watch a soccer match where one team is down by ten and see a comback?
Very true. Sitting in teh stands on a beautiful summer day, watching everyone, keeping a scorecard and eating hotdogs...best summer day ever.
Some of my fondest memories are collecting and treasuring baseball cards and watching my heroes on the tube. (Ted Williams, Jackie Jenson, Carl Yastrezemski, Mickey Mantle, Yogi, Whitey, etc etc) I've heard it called "The Perfect Game." I agree. I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't love the game.
Exactly. To the uninformed they see a man standing on a base and a pitcher throw and the batter hit the ball on the ground and the runner go to second and the batter is thrown out.
to the informed we know the drama of holding the runner to the base. We are aware of the signals from the coach to the base coach to the batter and the runner. We are aware of how many outs and the line up ahead of this batter. We know there is a likely hood of some attempt to advance the runner. This time it was a hit and run play. We know if the batter hits behind the runnner and the runner leaves before the swing that the runner is assured to advance. We know the batter had to swing at a bad pitch to protect the already departed runner. We know the fielder who gets the ball on the ground must have the presence of mind to give up on the runner going to second and get the runner at first. We know the gammble of odds to advance this runner at the sacrefice of the batter to increase the chances at getting a run in in this inning.
to the uninformed it is boring. to the knowledgeable it is exciting. Plus you get to drink a beer outside in the sun. If you are lucky enough to be at a Cubs game during the week when all else are working. Heaven regardless of the final score.
Not necessarily. I know exactly how baseball works, and it's still boring as hell for me to watch. You can't divide people into 2 categories, you dunce. the "uninformed" and the "informed... Absurd... Different people appreciate different things on different levels.
By your statement that baseball is boring as hell for you to watch leads me to believe that you don't watch it, which would make you uninformed. I've been too busy to catch a game for over a week, and because of this I've fallen out of the loop. I don't know who's throwing well, hitting well, ect. and so the next game I watch will be catch up. I'll have little knowledge of what's going on because I haven't been paying attention. Just because you know the rules doesn't mean you understand the game, and if you choose not to understand it there's no shame in admitting it.
