Re: Why Christianity conerns me.
A good Christian does a good deed not out of fear of God, but out of love for our fellow man. That is the essence of being 'Christ-Like'. I'm not saying only Christians do good, so don't go there. And I'm tired of people being hypocritical on BOTH sides of the religion issue. Live and let live I always say. If you don't want to believe, fine. If you do believe, great! But don't come in with 'why this particular religion concerns me' like some sort of God judging a dubious creation. Don't lump every Christian into a demographic. And just because some Christians can be hypocritical does not make you any less of one yourself when you bash my faith and pretend your so much more enlightened than us. Your not, I assure you. Truth is, scientific understanding of the universe is incomplete, if you don't believe me, go ask a scientist. More truth: religion is a metaphore most of the time. Fact and truth are NOT the same thing. You can find meaning and truth in a fairy tale just like you can find facts and axioms in a science journal. No truth interpreted by faith is infallible, every fact discovered by science is subject to scrutiny. Take evolution for example. It's called a theory, and just because I happen to think it's most likely a scientific axiom doesn't make it so. Take the book of Genesis, of course the world didn't get wiped out by a global flood. Just because it's in the Bible does not make it literal fact. If I can find fact in a theory and truth in a Biblical story, maybe you can too.

A 'true Christian' is a Christian who shares certain interpretations of the faith with the speaker. The exact definition will vary wildly depending on who's speaking.

Re: Why Christianity conerns me.
A true Christian is a person who accepts Christ as their personal lord and savior. A person who believes that Jesus dies on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. If any 'Christian' speaker says anything other than that basic principle is not a Christian at all. That basic article of faith is all that really matters.

I don't think this dogma causes many Christians to give a damn about their behavior. I think our behavior is caused by other things, and then we use dogmas to justify ourselves.
Christian cultures often have a very strong emphasis on doing good and being good persons. Unfortunately, that comes at the prize of emotional harm to those who fall outside of acceptable categories, like having sex outside of marriage, not going to church often enough etc. This dogma you are talking about is therefore pure genius, as it gives people a way to rid their conscience and make peace with themselves.
That was, of course, the non-christian outside analysis.

Both socially and economically libertarian, not because it is morally right, but because I like it, and it is good for me.
