Re: The Russian Giant Returns
I've often thought Russia would make a return on the world stage as a superpower, I just didn't expect it to be so soon. Their economy is booming and their government is becoming more totalitarian as the days pass. Their aggression towards Georgia only means that this may erupt into a nother semi-Cold War with the northern giant. The coming years should be interesting.

Re: The Russian Giant Returns
I will never understand American politics - what the hell are the warships doing in Georgia? Why should the US act alone without the UN or NATO?
Having American and Russian warships so close is a real development. But America shouldn't look to policing the world without the UN, this is really bad.

Because those two organizations are extremely innefficient and unreliable?

Seriously, all the UN is a big room of nice suits that looks at problems in the world and tell the causes of the problems, "...stop it" and when they don't, they don't know what to do.

I don't remember voting the US into that role. So democracy, that America champions doesn't apply outside it's borders? How did America self-appoint itself and when did this happen? Or Georgia is in the neighbourhood?

The US is sending supplies to an ally with that ally's consent and at their request. I don't see the problem.
Regardless of what one thinks of the UN, there is absolutely nothing at all it could ever possibly do to restrain the actions of a permanent Security Council member. Russia has a veto over any UN-sanctioned military action.

That should really depend on the geo-political situation of that particular part of the world. The US receives thousands of such requests from 'allies' everyday, but it doesn't just act on it by sending warships. This is the typical republican 'I prefer to talk with my fist than mouth' technique.
The UN can still act if a majority of the house votes on a resolution and the security council presses Russia diplomatically - it's the end of it all. Ultimately, UN should run things, not NATO or the US.
UN was conceived for such purposes, United States is alone and NATO is a military organization. It's really weird that you sidestep UN for such issues. I don't think there are such days in the UN where complete division would divide the states, diplomacy works since Communism is gone.

They probably could win a majority vote in the General Assembly, but to what end? Every year, the General Assembly passes a resolution calling on the US to end its embargo of Cuba. Only the US, Israel, Micronesia and the Marshall islands tend to vote against these resolutions. Do they achieve anything?
