I got this e-mail this morning:

I am Dr. David Whiteway from Islington, North West London, here in England. I work for Lloyds TSB Bank, London. I am writing you from my office that will be of an immense benefit to both of us. In my department, being the assistant manager (Greater London Regional Office), I discovered an abandoned sum of £35.5 Million Pounds (Thirty-five Million Five Hundred British Pounds Sterling) in an account that belongs to one of our foreign customers Late Mr. Thompson Morrison, American citizen who unfortunately lost his life in the plane crash of Alaska Airlines Flight 261 which crashed on January 31 2000, including his wife and only daughter.

The choice of contacting you is aroused from the geographical nature of where you live, particularly due to the sensitivity of the transaction and the confidentiality herein. Now our bank has been waiting for any of the relatives to come-up for the claim but nobody has done that. I personally have been unsuccessful in locating the relatives for 2 years now.

I seek your consent to present you as the next of kin /Will Beneficiary to the deceased so that the proceeds of this account valued at 35.5 Million Pounds can be paid to you.

This will be disbursed or shared in these percentages, 60% to me and 40% to you. I have secured all necessary legal documents that can be used to back up this claim we are making. All I need is to fill in your names to the documents and legalise it in the court here to prove you as the legitimate beneficiary. All I require now is your honest Co-operation, Confidentiality and Trust to enable us see this transaction through. I guarantee you that this will be executed under a legitimate arrangement that will protect you from any breach of the law.

Please, provide me the following: as we have 5 days to run it through. This is very very URGENT PLEASE.

the funny thing about the 419's.
Some people actually fall for them. I mean, some people go all the way to Nigeria in order to meet with these people, and they get notes that are printed on Nigerian government paper with Nigerian official signatures.
When they go to Nigeria, they actually meet real people; but these real people have fake names, like Al-Haji (that's the name of anyone who has been on the Hajj). When they go there, these people put on the most elaborate show, complete with business suits and ferrari's to make sure that the people believe the offer is legit. These peopl are so good at scamming stupid westeners that there was one guy in the late 80's who got put in jail in Canada for trying to deposit a fradulent check, and while he was in jail he was trying to figure out how to contact the 'legitimate' person from the 419 scam!'

We get hundreds of these things in our work account. They tend to fall into a few main categories:

1) Money recently inherited from a father murdered by rebels needs to be smuggled out of the country
2) Incredibly wealthy person found God and wants someone to help them contribute their millions to charity before they die
3) Schemes similar to the OP
4) You've won the Dutch Allied Euromillions Superlottery!

We've even started getting them in French now.

This is another site based around scamming the scanners - trying to get them to photograph themselves doing foolish things and the like. All the pictures seem to be down at the minute, but here you can read a story about them initiating some scanner into the Holy Church of the Order of the Red Breast.
