SCHIP "smoke" and mirrors
The Dems are pulling a fast one on the country and nobody notices.
The SCHIP bill just vetoed by the President is to be paid for by once again rasing taxes on tobacco. Smokers are already the most heavily taxed citizens in the country and this bill would raise taxes another 3 or 4 dollars a cartoon, boosting smokes over 50 bucks a carton in some places.
Here's where the "smoke" comes in: Many analysts believe this additional hike will actually result in LESS revenue coming in, which means something else will have to be taxed to make up the difference. That means YOU, Mr or Mrs Non-Smoker. There is a finite limit to what people will pay for cigarettes and this bill will probably find that mark.
Additionally, there's this little tidbit: Smokers mostly come from the lower rungs of the economic ladder. In other words, most smokers are among the very people this bill is designed to "help." How much help is it to increase expenses on those very people who are already struggling? The practical effect of this bill is to make the poor pay for their own childrens health insurance, when they already can't afford it, while the rest of us pat ourselves on the back for being so beneficent.
What a fraud. I urge you to contact your Congress-critters and instruct them to vote to sustain this veto until some other means of paying for it is found.
