No I'm not. I'm sure you vote consistently for the GOP despite the fact that they've been putting your taxes up for 25 years while claiming that they've cut them. You've been paying 3.3% of every dollar of the first $90 000 a year that you've earned since 1983 to help make up the revenue drop caused by Reagan's disastrous 1981 tax cut (which went primarily to the top 1% of earners), and doubtless you'll face further tax increases in future years to help make up the huge revenue shortfalls caused by Bush's tax cuts (which went to the same people) and then they'll get you to vote for them again because your taxes are too high.

The fact is that mass immigration has grown our economy enormously over the last century. If you don't have the actual bodies to employ, you can't grow, can you? If we'd built a fence in 1950 and had only grown in population naturally then we'd be far closer to a 1950s standard of living than we are now. The fact that mass immigration hurts some low/middle income earners in the short term is just their tough luck. Stop crying about it and do what Americans are supposed to do, which is go back to school and/or work harder.

Let them in legally then they can pay taxes like the rest of us. You've got to realise that most of them have a social security number (obviously somebody else's, but never mind) so payroll taxes and others are deducted at source and sent to the Treasury. If you want them to pay every single penny in taxes, simply make them legal.

The fact that the median wage hasn't budged in thirty years while huge new costs like college tuition have come along is due to free trade policies and the GOP transferring the tax burden from high to low/middle income earners, plus the decline of unions. Both parties, but mainly the GOP are guilty of running the country for the benefit of a tiny elite. The costs to the average American from immigration are a drop in the bucket by comparison.

Whether or not that is true, they are still a huge burden.

The school closest to my agency has over 300 children whose parents are here illegally. That is just ONE school in the district. Multiply that thousands of schools. Add to that all of the extra services they are given that citizens are not - free medical and dental, housing, food, clothing (yes, they get all of this. I see it daily in my work).....all paid for by the LEGAL citizens of this country. Many of whom are doing without things such as medical and dental care.

They're a short-term cost but a long-term benefit. And if we have a legal program they have to pay for everything just like anybody else.
