Simple. Just add a @ followed by the username, without any space. Like @michaelr .

It'll create a link to the profile page, as well as notify the member (you, in this case) that you've been mentioned in this thread. You'll get a notification, just like when you get a PM. To know all the threads you have been mentioned at, just goto your profile page, and see the tab under 'mentions'.
