Public support for health care repeal plummets: AP poll

Public support for health care repeal plummets: AP poll

A new poll shows that support for repealing the contentious healthcare reform bill has dropped and only a minority of Americans oppose it.

Public support for repealing last year's sweeping health care reform law has fallen dramatically in the aftermath of a shooting rampage in Arizona that critically injured a Democratic congresswoman.

Only one in four Americans said they support full repeal of the reforms, according to a newly-released Associated Press-GfK poll, and 30 percent strongly opposed the law, the lowest figure since September 2009.

The drop is particularly notable among Republicans. Forty-nine percent said they're against the law, down considerably from 61 percent after the elections.

A survey by Gallup found that on Jan. 7, one day before the shootings, Americans supported repeal by a margin of 46 to 40 percent.

But the nation remains deeply divided over the law. Overall, 40 percent in the AP-GfK poll said they support it, while 41 percent were less than pleased, some of whom thought it doesn't go far enough.

The story goes on to mention the Rep repeal effort in the House next week, and references the 'Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act'. I thought I read the GOP did take the word 'killing' out of the title of the bill. Not sure when that happened though.

Repubs will never take KILLING out. They have nothing left now but FEAR mongering tactics. I hope this doesn't get repealed. Want to cut spending? Cut all subsides and cut miltary spending by 30%. End the wars and focus on America rather then Iraq rebuilding. Its not rocket science...

I wonder if this will make any difference? Many in favor of repealing it argued that the majority of americans didn't want health care. So if the poll shows that the majority of americans want to keep it will they change their minds?

I actually hate polls. I don't believe they are accurate or dependable. But those mentioned above used the polls to support their prior argument so will they allow polls to support this one? Interesting.

That's an odd correlation for so many people to make.

Did people start hating Jodie Foster when that guy shot Reagan?

I think it might change some minds. Not a certain segment, but others ... yes.

It doesn't seem that odd to me. First, the rhetoric around the health care bill opposition was particularly hateful, and alot of people are rejecting that in the wake of the shooting. Second, a major cause of the shooting appears to be mental illness, and of course, access to health care would be relevant to that as well.

Everyone wants healthcare.. They just don't want the republican version of it.. Most of the nation still don't understand what is in the bill.. Some believe there are death panels.. Some believe it is socialized care.. There are countless missconceptions about the bill that if someone doesn't want it.. It is most likely because he doesn't know what is in it.. The tea party and many republicans did a great job of smearing and lying about healthcare.. They can't even call it healthcare.. It is a negative slurr, Obamacare.. And we all know that Obamacare is a bad thing don't we.. Kinda of like socialized.. Or socialism.. I have yet to figure out what is wrong with those two words..

I think what this shooting has done is opened a lot of people's eyes to the republican rhetoric.. Right or wrong, Palin took a pounding in the news.. Countless examples of republican rhetoric was being sprayed all over the news. I would like to think it simply opened a lot of poeple's eyes to the reality of republican politics..

It would be in republicans best interest to nix the rhetoric and cooperate and work across the isle.. Hopefully more people are paying attention and their attitude could back fire on them at the ballot box..

    One can only hope..

    All true.

    From the OP:
Overall, 40 percent in the AP-GfK poll said they support it, while 41 percent were less than pleased, some of whom thought it doesn't go far enough.
I'm pro-healthcare reform, and while Obama's plan doesn't make me insanely happy, it's a step in the right direction.

What we really need to do is go to a nationalized program where the insurance companies lose their stranglehold on the sick and dying.

Perhaps this poll is reflective of the people who didn't like the bill because it didn't go far enough.
