From disease to addiction, parenting to attention deficit disorder,

Dr. Gabor Maté on the Stress-Disease Connection, Addiction, Attention Deficit Disorder and the Destruction of American Childhood

The doctor opens up some areas of thought about addiction and other common maladies affecting society.

Today, a Democracy Now! special with the Canadian physician and bestselling author, Dr. Gabor Maté. From disease to addiction, parenting to attention deficit disorder, Dr. Maté’s work focuses on the centrality of early childhood experiences to the development of the brain, and how those experiences can impact everything from behavioral patterns to physical and mental illness. While the relationship between emotional stress and disease, and mental and physical health more broadly, is often considered controversial within medical orthodoxy, Dr. Maté argues too many doctors seem to have forgotten what was once a commonplace assumption, that emotions are deeply implicated in both the development of illness, addictions and disorders, and in their healing.
"Perhaps the earth can teach us, as when everything seems dead in winter and
later proves to be alive. " Pablo Neruda

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.” Upton Sinclair

"One does not sell the earth that people walk upon." John Trudell (after Crazy Horse)

"This world we live in is but thickened light." - -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I read a book a few years back by Daniel Goleman, the author of Vital Lies, Simple Truths, entitled Emotional Intelligence. It was interesting to learn how emotion matters more than IQ. He explains factors that lead one to emotional intelligence such as self-awareness, self-discipline, and empathy.

Prisons are full of ADD and ADHD men and women.

My son has ADHD and was a hand full in his teens. Patience and love, you need to have those to cope with them. He still gives me gray hairs.
