    Psychiatrists, evil?

What are people's thoughts on psychiatrists prescribing unapproved medication (SSRI's) to adolescent's suffering from depression or other mental illnesses?

In Australia these drugs, one being fluoxotine, are unapproved for the use in adolescents due to the significant adverse reactions.

Thousands of adolescents are prescribed these drugs the minute they show signs of depression. Apparently this is meant to 'help' yet in the vast majority of cases it has the opposite effect. With patients becoming violent and their impulsive behavior skyrocketing. Suicidial ideation and self harming behaviour are also significantly increased.

I have known of several cases where someone is put on these drugs and the next week they've shot themself, or done something equally horrific.

What are people's thoughts? It is a very big issue.

I was diagnosed with depression and i was put on Zoloft. It didn't help. so i stopped taking it and i'm fine. I MADE myself happy again. This is a great post Hannah, this is something i'm really interested in. i dont think that psychological medications will help a person completely. If they set their mind to it enough, they can cure themselves. Like John Nash for example, he was schizophrenic, and he practically cured himself.

oh another thought, I also think that with all the meds out there, for depression and other mental illnesses, people THINK that they need them to be "normal" so they rely on them. imo

Generally the medication either does nothing - that's if your lucky - it usually makes you worse. I'm glad to know you made your self happy. I'm not crazy enough to say depression isn't real - because it is, very much so. But drugs and pshchiatrists only make it worse.

The best way to overcome depression is by surrounding yourself with positive things and people.

very true. which i did. the thing that got me down the most was i always think im fat/chubby. typical girl behavior. but then i realized, i wear a size small in juniors, and i can wear some young girl's clothes too, i wear a size 3 pants in junior's. and i wear a 32 B. a 32 is the smallest a bra size gets. so how the hell am i fat/ chubby? so whenever i feel bad about my appearance i think about that, and it goes away. ppl have to force the bad thought out. meds arent going to do that.

Definitely not. You have some good thinking going on there! :-)

Yet psychiatrists are still pumping kids full of drugs unneccesairily. All teenage girls suffer from low self esteem at some point - the doctors take advantage of things like this so they can use the kids as guinea pigs. It's outrageous. Especially when the result is an increase in the number of fatalities.

they're all about the money. that's why, when i become a psychiatrist, i'll will avoid meds at all costs.

I watched the dog whisperer one day. He was dealing with a hyper dog. His recommendation was excersise. Later I watched a show with a woman asking a doctor to increase her sons meds because he was hyper. She looked as though she had been sitting on the couch for a couple of years. I don't know but I think the dog whisperer had it about right. If that gal would get her butt up and do something physical with her kid. They would both be better off.

Take the case to your health rights ombudsman. If you are seeing so many (and I guess this is among your freinds and not just reported on the news) then chances are they are all seeing the same doctor - "Unapproved" drugs MUST get federal permission - even a consultant cannot just write a prescription. This is traceable and if there is high incidence of self-harm following this then the ombudsman needs to know so that the incidences can be investigated
