Damned fine job of reducing tensions created by the Bush administration. Kudos to the Obama administration for its diplomatic efforts.

Russia says it has scrapped plans to deploy missiles in a region near Poland after U.S. President Barack Obama canceled plans for a missile defense system in Central Europe.

In a radio interview Saturday, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Popovkin said Mr. Obama's move has made the deployment of Iskander short-range missiles in the Kaliningrad region unnecessary.

So let me get this straight.

Russia supplies a nuclear plant to Iran and supplies them with technology and Iran developes an ICBM and is near an H bomb.

so then the USA says it will deploy a defensive missle shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Russia counters with moving bombers into position in South America and in the Caribean.

Russia says it plans deploy offensive missle systems around Poland.

Obama then announces he plans to end the defensive missle system in Europe.

You see this as a success? How?

Also do you realize that the system planned in Poland and the Czech Republic was set up also to protect the US east coast from a nuclear ICBM attack? We were to have one system in Alaska to protect the west coast and one in Poland to protect our east coast. The distance is required to have the time for it to work, to intercept. Iran has the ability to hit Greece right now with an ICBM. It may be only a couple of years before that range is extended 10 fold. In addition who knows what other events my come up with countries that already have the bomb and ICBMs? You plan for the future with this kind of system not for yesterday.

But oh great job by Obama.

    "..East Coast left unprotected

Twenty-six years after Reagan's famous speech, the most visible element of his strategy is a system of missile interceptors that sprawl across the wilds of Alaska and a sister base in California. The system's "kill vehicles" are meant to zoom into space and destroy enemy warheads -- presumably a single North Korean launching -- by force of impact. Military and private experts say the West Coast interceptors could also smash an Iranian warhead, unless it was headed toward the East Coast of the United States. That is why the Bush administration wanted to erect additional interceptors in Poland. To advocates of the classic vision of missile defense, it is unconscionable to leave the East Coast unprotected.

But critics of the interceptor system say its flight tests have repeatedly fallen short, and call its supposed protection a mirage.

Now comes the next debate: Whether the Obama plan is any more technologically feasible than past efforts.

So Obama faces the same challenge as Reagan: Winning the argument that his version of missile defense is workable -- or at least workable enough to be a potent political weapon...."

It's a success because Russia has decided to drop plans for an opposing defensive system due to Obama's change in what was Bush's original missile defense system.

Do you have a problem with Obama improving relations with Russia after Bush nearly destroyed them?

We have been working for decades and spending billions of dollars to develop and depoly a defensive shield around the USA. In one fell swoop Obama will set us back years.

"...Previous intelligence assessed that Iran would have an ICBM capable of menacing Europe and the United States sometime between 2012 and 2015, another U.S. government official said.

The Bush administration had calculated that Iran might be able to do that as soon as 2012, but the new assessment pushes the date back to 2015 to 2020, a U.S. government official familiar with the report told The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the report remains classified.

2015 is not far away at all. Perhaps the previous date of 2012 is correct. Either way it is soon.

How so? An effective alternative defensive system is still being deployed. And it is not the only missile defense system that will be in operation.

Besides, the majority of Poles didn't want the missles based in their country.

You do realize that the Bush administration had a nasty habit of fabricating information to achieve its ends.
