I don't think we should be paying for anyone's elections, although there might be good reason to insure they are handled fairly. That's a lot of damn money for one election anyway.

I agree, what's going to happen will with or without our help. Besides, we as taxpayers shouldn't be paying for their elections anyway.

CAIRO (AP) Egypt's largest political group, the Muslim Brotherhood, warned the country's military rulers Saturday not to interfere in the writing of a new constitution. The statement from the Brotherhood marks the first time the Islamist group has directly challenged Egypt's ruling military council since the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak in February.

The group's stand was prompted by comments from a senior government official this week that the military council will soon set out certain principles outlining who is eligible to draft a new constitution. The Brotherhood also fears the military is trying to enshrine a political role for itself in the constitution.

Parliamentary elections are slated for later this year, and the Brotherhood and its fellow Islamists are expected to do well at the polls. That would likely give them a dominant voice in appointing the committee that will draft a new constitution.

Liberals fear that an Islamist-dominated committee will produce a document that serves only the Islamists' agenda.....snip~



Looks like things aren't so much about Democracy with Egypt. As we recall John Kerry running over to Egypt because he just had to see Democracy in Action. Also the Military Council did vote in and make it Illegal to set up, protest, organize, and or particpate in any such event in any public place. That would mark such as demonstrations and or protests. Hence trying to prevent any type of uprising.
Now making Headlines all across the World.....the same group that was allegedly kicked out of Egypt is actually Directly Challenging Egypt's Military Might. Thoughts on how this is going to affect the US policy?

Egypt is an ally whose US-trained military is armed with and buys some of the best made-in-usa weapons. It is in the USA's strategic interest that the Egyptian government evolve from a military dictorship and become a liberal democracy with it's people our friends. Their govt must not be taken over by a conservative theocracy.
