    Rachel Maddow Show

Please watch the video before you post here.. I think it lays out the situation quite nicely..

We don't want an Islamist regime. All other talk is deception.

I am not really sure that answers the question.. Do we support the people or do we back the current government??

Neither, we have enough problems of our own.

However, if I was forced to choose I'd side with the people. I always side with people over government, because if becomes a people vs. government situation it's not a choice at all IMO

I know Fox News has been spreading fear that Muslim extremists are behind the insurrection, in line with their usual "Be Afraid...Be very afraid" motif when it comes to anything but the real thing we should fear.....health problems.
I think we have to play it down the middle like President Obama is doing....& appeal for non-violence from both sides.

People power is sweeping the region. Supporting dictators in the name of stability hasn't worked for the last 60 years, time for a change.

When you say "we", do you mean the people of the US?

Because the US government has backed the current Egyptian government all along. Some mild gestures from Obama about not "taking sides" is irrelevant when when we look at what the US really supports.

We can appeal for non-violence for both sides, but the reality is that the US government has supplied Egypt with $1.3 billion in military aid in 2009. (1)

I think a lot of it goes back to us backing every anti-communist dictator in the world during the Cold War, but now we have no excuse to support anyone who isn't for democracy & freedom.

I can agree with this, because it would be beneficial for the world community to actually support democracy. That isn't happening. Mubarak's grip on the presidency coupled with the US's vast sum of military aid to Egypt has maintained the status quo. Not coincidentally, Israel is the other top recipient of military aid. It's US-fed power in the region through military means.
