    Russian Subs Patrolling West Coast

A pair of nuclear-powered Russian attack submarines has been patrolling off the eastern seaboard of the United States in recent days, a rare mission that has raised concerns inside the Pentagon and intelligence agencies abouta more assertive stance by the Russian military. The episode has echoes of the cold war era, when the United States and the Soviet Union regularly parked submarines off each other’s coasts to steal military secrets, track the movements of their underwater fleets — and be poised for war.

Yeah, this stuff happens all the time. US military does this shit all the time to other countries. They are in international waters so who cares. I do see this as a story the MSM will try to sensationalize, though

If we didn't know about it, there'd be no reason for you to be worried.

There is a whole fleet of subs patrolling just a mile or so away from my house... I'll be launching an attack tonight around 6pm if anyone wants to join me.

Take me home Momma and put me to bed. I have seen enough to know I have seen too much.

This is not correct. I am not sure what secret a sub could steal, as it will not have sufficient electrical surveilance capability to crack broadcast signals. And as far as tracking movements, the subs having a known position makes it easier to find and track them. It is the sub that we don't see that is the problem.

But be "poised for war"? Isn't that the duty of all national militaries, to be alert and ready? That prase is intended to get people to read something into the story, such as an attempt to cause an incident that could lead to war.

Subs have a very specific purpose in the arsenal of the US and Russia, and patrolling coasts is not that purpose.

I say swing past them in a small craft and toss water ballons.

During WWII, in 1943, the Germans build an airfield in France that had wodden airplanes, designed as a ruse for the British air corp. The Brits bombed them with wooden bombs.

Are you sure you're in the center PH? I'm not trying to pick a fight but honestly...a former poster named BurningGiraffe thought he was in the center but his posts were always center right to far right. Your posts so far remind me of his. Like I said...no disrepsect intended and I'm off topic but just sayin'

Yep, those boomers are what's keeping the peace for the most part. I doubt the American subs can even be picked up. Made the land base missle silo's obsolete.

The Russians are engaging in an over-all in your face approach which will feature next spring dropping military troops onto the North Pole (technically Canadian soil) and advancing claims to the Northern waters in the Arctic that will conflict with U.S., Canadian, and Danish claims.

In Canada Russian expansionist policies are in direct conflict with our sovereignty. While the U.S. also disputes Northern waters within Canada trying to argue they should be acccessible to all nations they will end up coming to an agreement with Canada and I am confident Denmark too as to how to deal in an orderly manner with the North.

The Russians on the other hand have made it clear they march to the sound of their own piper.

Russia is not the benevolent nation some of you think it is and is taking advantage of the turmoil in Afghanistan and other world sites to advance its own agenda in other parts of the world.

The U.S. is not capable of containing Russia by itself anymore. I believe Canada should strengthen its Northern command (which it is supposedly doing) so we can asset our soverign rights.

I would go so far as to say that Russia is the single most dangerous entity on the world stage at the present time. More so than any combination of Middle Eastern butchers, North Korean nutjobs, Chinese thought police or US neocons. As far as capacity for harm, complete lack of democratic institutions, and malicious intent... I think they take they cake. And I say this knowing full well that this was not the case from 1945 to 1990 when the US had a greater capacity and willingness to use violence for ideology and economic 'interests' than the USSR did.

The thing is Roobarb, I think Russia is saber rattling and boot stomping in the arctic for one reason only... because it's all they've got. The fact is the US is going to get its grubby fingers into the resources up there, either by arguing an Alaskan shelf or just by bullying their way into making it internationally accessable - knowing full well they're the only ones with the money and equipment to make use of it. EU will back Denmark and other scandinavian stakeholders into taking ownership of what has generally been considered Canadian terrirtory for a century since there was nothing of value there anyway (going to be a little less pink on our kid's school maps). Canada will lease or rent European and American technology and equipment to get enough of the pie to make it not worth our while to complain, and Russia is going to be stuck with a bunch of paratroopers marching along undeveloped, untapped wilderness saying "it's ours, it's all ours".

I know Harper has committed to a Northern presence, and he seems genuine about it. But it's simply too large an area. The entire military couldn't patrol that kind of area. A few years deployment in Afghanistan has exhausted us. What are we gonna do up there?
