    Ban on Assisted Suicide Ad

CBC News - Canada - Assisted suicide ad banned in Canada

An Australian-based organization that promotes assisted suicide is considering legal action after Canadian regulators refused to allow one of its advertisements to be broadcast in Canada.

Exit International's founder, Philip Nitschke, called the 45-second ad reasonable and one "that Canadians will benefit from seeing."

Exit International had hoped to roll out the ad to promote its upcoming "Safe Exit Workshop" tour, a five-city North American venture including stops in Vancouver and Toronto. The workshop includes a step-by-step demonstration by Nitschke of how to commit suicide, as well as information sessions on non-prescription drugs, poisons and gases.

Canadian law forbids counselling or assisting someone in committing suicide.

The Television Bureau of Canada, which establishes agreed-upon standards and guidelines for its 150-plus members in producing advertisements, has so far refused to clear the ad for airing.

The USA has a similar ban on assisted suicide. Rather than condemn someone to a painfully horrible death from an incurable disease, I favor allowing it but only under strict guidelines and conditions. Oh yes, and no Soylent Green crackers!

The Swiss government has rejected calls to ban groups like Dignitas assisted suicide, but to propose new rules to limit their work.Assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland, provided that the aid can not benefit from Government death. The a patient said the majority of governments and local groups were consulted in the drafting stricter rules for assisted suicide groups.

Thoughts? Sure, in no particular order:

An unalienable right to life means that it is never okay for someone else to intentionally kill you (meaning healthcare professionals should never take on this role - there's a whole side discussion on "active" euthanasia vs. "passive euthanasia," though, and I'd contend that "passive euthanasia" isn't euthanasia at all).

However, it does not mean that it is inherently wrong to kill yourself, though certain religions will say otherwise, and common sense would indicate the same if you would be abdicating responsibilities such that you cause harm to your loved ones.

On free speech grounds, I think this ad should be allowed; if the content is just information about how one could commit suicide themselves, then I assume most people have the internet in this day and age, and we still sell The Anarchist Cookbook, after all.

As a Democrat, I take solace in the fact that the Republicans have nominated the guy who lost the nomination to the guy who lost the presidency to the guy who is now the President.

Why would the advertisement be allowed? "Canadian law forbids counselling or assisting someone in committing suicide."

Seems sensible. They should publish the information online. I don't see why they would have expected to be able to illegally advertise.
