It is bad but this pattern of insouciance they are set on following will produce grave consequences for them in the future if they keep it up.
Hard to tell exactly what might happen, but the Dark Ages have been over for a long time. People will recognize what the Church has done and hold them accountable.
Dogmatic religions are their own worst enemy.
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from Birmingham Jail, April 16, 1963
"When rules are selectively administered, when bias influences who is punished and who is not then everyone will begin to doubt the justice of the system."
THE CHURCH has never claimed to be a democratic institution so it is no suprise that the good Cardinal was told to eat his red beenie. It is odd and sad that a Church that has confression and foregiveness in it's process and beleifs has not confessed openly and has not asked for foregiveness. That is after attonement. As a Catholic I have been beyond disgusted with the so called leadership of THE CHURCH.

Heres an article you might find interesting.
It really is high time to let the Catholic priests have wives and eventually have women clergy. The current 'all boys club' mentality is a bit too medieval imo.
A Woman’s Place Is in the Church
The cause of the Catholic clergy's sex-abuse scandal is no mystery: insular groups of men often do bad things. So why not break up the all-male club?

"Control is an illusion, you infantile egomaniac. Nobody knows what's gonna happen next: not on a freeway, not in an airplane, not inside our own bodies and certainly not on a racetrack with 40 other infantile egomaniacs." - the former mrs cruise
Schoenborn has been a leading figure in the abuse crisis, forcefully denouncing abuse, presiding over service of reparations for victims and openly calling for an honest examination of issues like priestly celibacy. It is Schoenborn's overall progressiveness within the ranks of the Church that makes him a "problem" with the Vatican, considering that he wants the church to reexamine a host of issues, including celibacy and homosexuality. It seems to be a familiar conflict: dogma vs reason. In other comments on April 28, Schoenborn was quoted as saying the quality of a gay relationship should be taken into greater consideration, the church needed a new perspective on the remarriage of divorcees, and it was no secret the Vatican government was ''in urgent need of reform.''
